Product Photo Secrets to Boost eBay Sales

There are so many reasons why your product might not sell on eBay.

It might not have the right description or it might be in the wrong category. It could be overpriced, particularly once you include shipping. Maybe you have a really terrible title that’s not giving you search visibility.

Or maybe… you have poor-quality product images.

That may be the case, but have no fear. Let me share with you some secrets to boost eBay sales with better product photos.

eBay (and your buyers!) love great product photos

Some words of wisdom directly from the world’s largest online customer-to-customer marketplace:

Using lots of high-quality pictures provides a great shopping experience and helps to sell your items.

In other words, great photos + a lot of them = you’ll boost eBay sales.

These are eBay’s current photo requirements:

  • Every listing must have at least one photo
  • Minimum photo size is 500 pixels for the longest side
  • No borders on photos
  • Watermarks cannot take up more than 5% of image area; cannot have opacity of more than 50%; cannot cover the item
  • No text or artwork on photos
  • Stock photos can only be used for brand-new items
  • Recommended: Images should be 800-1600 pixels on the longest side to accommodate the zoom feature.

 

Humans are visual creatures. Zabisco’s infographic of infographics (watch it!) suggests 90% of information that’s transmitted to the brain is visual — a huuuuuge amount.

 

You can spend hours writing an eloquent product description, but without great images to accompany your web copy, you’re fighting an uphill battle.

Unfortunately, not many business owners and auctioneers are aware of this and resort to selling their products at very low prices just for the sake of making a sale, when that doesn’t have to be the case.

The point of your product image when selling online is to best replicate reality and to make up for the fact that your customer can’t physically interact with the product.

Make sure your images are clear; you want your customers to know you’re not aiming to deceive, and you’re presenting your product exactly as it is. Particularly with used items, a clear product image shows you have confidence in your product because under bright lighting, flaws and imperfections are more visible.

I could ramble about product photography for hours, but I think when you’re selling on eBay, the most important thing is to have multiple photos for a product. It’s the next best thing to a professional 360-degree rotational product image, which can be costly and time-consuming to create.

So focus on your photos to boost eBay sales

eBay has found that using multiple images to create a product gallery increases hits by 40%. Simply take the extra 30 seconds to shoot your product from different angles, and you’ll be surprised at the difference that can make.

If you want your product to pop, photograph it on a white background! It works for professional online stores, and it works for smaller eBay sellers too.
